The postcard of Boris Coridian

  • La Carte Postale

Because at Touriste we love receiving postcards, we asked our favorite globetrotters to write to us… We are happy to share this little monthly treat with you!

What kind of tourist are you?

Tourist is the role you take on when you voluntarily leave your place of residence. As a result, I am often a tourist. Sometimes close to home, in places I am discovering, in France or abroad. I have a very peaceful relationship with this concept. When I was younger, I used to hide my travel guides during my… trips, for fear of being mistaken for a tourist. Today, not only do I embrace this role, but I strive to be a respectful, curious, and enthusiastic tourist. My biggest fear would be to become an “over-tourist” who frequents over-touristy places. That’s not likely to happen, because I avoid them as much as possible.

Where does your love of travel come from?

Quite simply, from traveling! As a child, I have fond memories of trips abroad with my parents, camping in Sicily, Wales, and Turkey. For my job, I’ve been lucky enough to travel around the world, from Hawaii to Seoul, Rio to Helsinki. This love of “elsewhere” has never left me, nor have I ever grown tired of it. Even if today I prefer “elsewhere” closer to home than far away. My advanced age, no doubt…

Any recommendations?

I have a deep passion for restaurants of all categories and styles. I love discovering a destination through its cuisine. I’m a big planner when it comes to my gastronomic outings (if you could see my Google Maps…), but nothing beats stumbling upon a magical restaurant by chance. One that springs to mind is La Cantina, a fish and seafood restaurant located on the small beach of San Fruttuoso in Italy. It’s a place that can only be reached by boat. You eat at tables set up on the pebbles. The food is simple and not exactly mind-blowing, but the beauty of the place, its modesty, and the fact that I went there without any particular expectations make it one of my most memorable experiences. And it’s very close to Camogli, the small town in Liguria famous for its cheese focaccia, a kind of ultra-thin pizza bread filled with melted cheese… As a tourist, Italy is unbeatable!

Your next destination?

Japan, next winter. To introduce my youngest son, Ulysse, to this incredible country. We like the idea of going there “off-season” and—why not—walking in the powder snow of the Japanese Alps. On the agenda: dense urban areas, nature, and the wild coast. And of course… beautiful restaurants to discover.

A book to slip into our suitcase?

Touriste by my friend Julien Blanc-Gras, of course… I love his deadpan style and his sensitive and humorous take on travel. And all the books by Guillaume Jan, my other writer-traveler friend.

A song VOYAGE, VOYAGE?

When it comes to music, listening to Immensità by Andrea Laszlo De Simone immediately transports me…

What is your hotel ritual?

Ask room service NOT to clean my room every day. I like to make my bed myself and I don’t understand the idea of having a completely tidy, even sterile room. That doesn’t mean I’m messy, mind you!
