At Touriste we love receiving postcards, so we asked our favorite globetrotters to write to us… We are happy to share this monthly pleasure with you !  From Aswan in Egypt A little about myself … I am Jean-François Rial, CEO of Voyageurs du Monde. I am writing to you from … From Aswan in Egypt where I came to see our boat, the Steam Ship Sudan (and our dahabieh la Flâneuse du Nil) that I had not seen since the sanitary crisis. It was a wonderful moment of reunion with the crew, more than 50 people who for the most part have been with us for more than twenty years, despite the national and international crises! They are family. My Tourist moment … I like the term tourist. The trucker or the salesman is a tourist or a traveler like any other, as said by a great anthropologist whose name escaped me. Let’s say that I am a tourist-traveler. I like to spend time in a country even if it means coming back again and again. That’s what I prefer now, to come back to the countries I loved because I miss them and even more after these last two years. A souvenir I always bring back … I like traveling as lightly as possible, so bringing back souvenirs is not my thing but when it occurs I take fruits or spices or local food. I just come back from Egypt with hibiscus jam, olives and two mangoes…A Short Story In Mont Kenya Safari Club, I couldn’t sleep, so I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bar. I had to cross the huge park of the hotel, I did it unconsciously and when I arrived, the rangers who were having a drink with their friends insulted me for having taken such a risk with the lions, hyenas and other wild animals that were roaming all night. Then when they realized that I was French like Zidane, I spent the night talking football with them and replayed, with many imitations, legendary actions of Zinedine…. I went back to my room well accompanied in the early hours of the morning. Regards,     Jean-François Rial

At Touriste we love receiving postcards, so we asked our favorite globetrotters to write to us… We are happy to share this monthly pleasure with you !  From My Parisian Workshop A little about myself … I am Antoine Ricardou, co-founder of Atelier Saint Lazare (ex-bepoles studios) in Paris and New York. I am also the devoted husband of Gwen, a landscape architect who brings green into my life, the father of Gaspard who is 16 and still loves us, of Diane who is 13 and doesn’t like kisses and of Irene who likes to understand how it works. I am writing to you from … My Atelier in the 9th district of Paris. A hybrid place where you can cook as well as draw. A place that we wanted to be resolutely oriented towards “doing” so that talents can be expressed with the hands as well as with the head. My Tourist moment … I am a tourist who avoids tourists. I am a tourist who does not like to be told what to do. I like to get lost, I don’t read guidebooks and I don’t read reviews of restaurants. I go by instinct. I often stop to draw. I like the long time of drawing which allows me a level of observation that cannot be found in any other meditation. A souvenir I always bring back … A drawing. I draw all the time but even more when I travel.“I like this drawing of a 747 that I drew just before the lockdown on the way to NYC. It’s one of the last ones in operation I think (it was leaving for the Caribbean fully loaded of course). It reminds me so much of my first long haul flights. This plane was wonderful. I love drawing in the boarding hall.” A Short Story When I travel to ride my bike, I am often offered to leave it in the hotel’s shed. I always refuse and ask to keep it in my room. One day in Provence (hence the lilting accent you have to take to read this text) the receptionist asks me a little mockingly if I sleep with my bike? I go up and discover my tiny room. Impossible to move inside with the bike in the way. I put my bike on the bed the time to get organized. That’s when they bring me my dinner. The girl looks at the bike on the bed and says: “Oh yes! my colleague was right, this madman really sleeps with his bike !” Regards,     Antoine Ricardou

At Touriste we love receiving postcards, so we asked our favorite globetrotters to write to us… We are happy to share this monthly pleasure with you !  From Zabriskie Point, Death Valley – California A little about myself … Elisha Karmitz, I am the general manager of the mk2 cinema group. My Tourist moment … Before the children, rather big backpacking trip and a lot of pictures. Since a few years, country house with family. A souvenir I always bring back … The memory of everything I have eaten, I have a good memory of taste!“I reassure you, it is my spouse Claire Tran on the picture who was a dancer at the beginning of her career. Zabriskie Point was known by the Doors. This is where they opened their “doors of perception” and it was also made famous by the eponymous movie.” A Short Story The last one is my biggest laugh of the year with my brother in Lyon during the Lumières festival but I can’t really tell you why here! Regards,         Elisha Karmitz

At Touriste we love receiving postcards, so we asked our favorite globetrotters to write to us… We are happy to share this monthly pleasure with you !  From Hydra in Greece A little about myself … I am Luke Edward Hall, an artist, designer and columnist based in London and the Cotswolds. My Tourist moment … It depends on where I’m going. I’m not good at sitting still and doing nothing. I like to get lost visiting museums and galleries. I’m also very greedy, so most days are based around working out where we should be having lunch. A souvenir I always bring back … I love to bring home unique things made in the place I’m visiting – I particularly like finding the best junk and antique shops and rummaging to find ceramics and bits of old glass. I also like visiting local art supply shops (for example there is one in Florence that makes the best sketchbooks), bookshops and vintage clothing stores.A Short Story We booked a hotel in Cornwall about eight years ago, a castle right on the cliffs. When we arrived we immediately sensed a very weird vibe. After a bit of Googling, we found out that the castle was owned by Scientologists, and they used it as a kind of headquarters. We managed one night and then fled! Regards,          Luke Edward Hall
